Grading at Southside: How the Levels Work (and Why It Builds Real Confidence)

A lot of people think grading is only for “serious” martial artists.

But at Southside, grading is for anyone who wants a clear path forward.

It’s a way to track your progress, set achievable goals, and get a moment to look back and realise: I’m not the same person who walked in on day one.

What is grading?

Grading is how we measure your progress through Muay Thai — from fundamentals through to advanced technique.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about building competence over time.

Southside runs 3–4 gradings per year, and the vibe is designed to be supportive, not stressful.

One of the biggest differences in the Southside approach is simple:

  • There’s no pass or fail.
  • If something needs work, your coaches help you build it in regular classes.

As the grading page puts it: this isn’t a test — it’s a checkpoint.

Why grading helps people stick with training

Most people don’t quit because they “don’t like Muay Thai.” They quit because life gets busy and training starts to feel random.

Grading solves that by giving you:

  • Progress you can see
  • Goals you can hit
  • A clear “what’s next”

That structure is a big confidence-builder — especially for beginners.

How the levels work (the big picture)

Southside’s grading system has 8 levels.

Kids, teens, and adults all follow the same overall system, with the skills and expectations tailored to age group and level.

The key point: you’re not thrown into the deep end. Each level builds on the last.

Level 1 — Beginner (Effort Level)

Level 1 is designed to acknowledge the most important win early on: showing up and committing to the process.

And if you’re wondering about sparring:

  • No sparring experience is required at Level 1
  • Sparring is not assessed at Level 1

That matters, because it removes a huge barrier for people who want to learn skills and build confidence without feeling pressured.

The 3 steps to grade

Southside keeps the process simple and predictable.

Step 1: Meet the eligibility requirements

First, you make sure you’re eligible for your level.

Step 2: Attend revision classes

Revision sessions prepare you step-by-step for grading day.

You’ll cover the exact skills you’ll be assessed on, so you’re not guessing.

Step 3: Grading day

On grading day, you’re assessed on what you’ve practised in revision classes.

It’s a chance to test yourself in a positive environment, with your teammates around you.

What happens after grading?

This is where a lot of people feel relieved.

If something needs more work on the day, the approach is:

  • Coaches support you during regular classes until you’ve met the standard
  • The goal is to help you progress — not hold you back

In other words: grading is part of the learning process, not a judgement.

Common questions (quick answers)

  • Do I have to grade? No — it’s optional. But it’s strongly recommended because it gives training direction.
  • What if I miss a grading? No stress. There are 3–4 per year, so you can do the next one when you’re ready.
  • Is there a cost? No — grading is included as part of membership.
  • What do I need to bring? Wraps, gloves, shin pads, and a good attitude.
  • What if I’m nervous? Totally normal. Most people are. The day is designed to be supportive and encouraging.

Why grading builds real confidence

Confidence isn’t just “feeling good.” It’s evidence.

Grading gives you evidence that:

  • you can commit to something
  • you can learn new skills
  • you can handle pressure in a safe environment
  • you can improve with feedback

And that kind of confidence tends to show up everywhere else in life.

If you’ve been on the fence about grading, think of it as a checkpoint — a chance to measure your progress and celebrate how far you’ve come.
