As teens mature, they become aware of more opportunities, realising that they now have the ability to make their own choices. Such freedom must be viewed with caution, as poor decision making can have long lasting negative effects, sometimes impacting beyond the teenage years. As a consequence, the way teens spend their time, and who they spend it with, becomes increasingly important.
Electronic devices are common place among teens today. They provide a diversion; distracting teens away from positive activities, often leading teens to engage in activities that are unhealthy or unproductive. Therefore, it is important for teens to engage in activities that are not solely associated with the internet or television, and where healthy benefits are enjoyed.
Besides the obvious fitness benefits, martial arts build’s character in an engaging and encouraging learning environment. This is essential during the teen years, as development into adulthood begins.
Below, we further outline why we think that every teenager should take up martial arts training.
1) Technology distraction
Mobile phones, internet and video games should be use in moderation – and let’s face it, there are better ways to spend time and have fun.
Martial arts provide a distraction from the influence of technology, focusing teens on self-development through the promotion of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The challenges presented in martial arts training, creates a journey of discovery for every teenager that cannot be experienced on the internet.
2) After-school activity
Martial arts provide teens with a positive, supervised and safe place to go after school, where they can hang with friends. Instead of hanging at the shops and (possibly) attracting trouble, martial arts training provides the opposite.
Martial arts develops focus, discipline, humility, and self-confidence. As an outlet to release stress and physical tension, martial arts keeps teenagers grounded and calm.
3) Bullying avoidance
Reports of bullying are becoming widespread, with some teens facing tough circumstances as they work themselves out socially.
Bullying is cruel and harmful. In some cases, bullying can scar a person for life. Therefore, it is extremely important to avoid falling victim to a bully.
Through martial arts, teenagers learn how to defend themselves, in-turn building self-confidence and assertiveness. In learning to be assertive, teens create clear boundaries with peers, regaining control in a non-violent manner.
The development of self-worth and confidence through martial arts training, ensures that an individual won’t fall victim to bullying.
4) Realising full potential
There is no other activity that physically pushes humans like martial arts training does. Further, the martial arts system of grade levels teaches participants to set and achieve goals.
As teens advance grade levels, they naturally want to push themselves to discover what they are capable off, and what they can achieve. Teenagers are generally at the stage in life where they are starting to develop physically, and martial arts training helps engage that physical aspect.
Martial arts training helps with realising the full potential of the human body. It brings out the best in people, fostering an environment that is conducive to developing laser focus and work ethic.
5) Build life long friendships
Martial arts teaches respect for all, and gives teenagers a sense of belonging.
Nowadays, social pressures can make life extremely hard for teens, especially within group settings. Martial arts brings teens closer together, by building social skills and creating communities with long lasting friendships.
The best thing about being part of a martial arts gym is the people, and the friendships with those people. Martial arts cannot be done alone – it’s the individuals that create a community type feel, and we need partners to train. It’s with those partners that friendships develop, as people are bought together to help out each other physically, and mentally. In overcoming obstacles together, a genuine closeness between friends develops that cannot be replaced.
Along the way, your training partners will walk beside you, sharing in your defeats and your triumphs. Martial arts lift’s the spirit, creating a positive outlook on life.
